From Slippery Slope to Sheer Cliff: MAiD's Impact on Canada

Thank you to everyone who joined our important discussion on the impact of euthanasia and assisted suicide, or medical assistance in dying (MAiD), on Canadians, featuring a forthcoming Cardus report by Alexander Raikin. Raikin’s previous analysis and investigative reporting has raised real concerns about the human cost of Canada’s MAiD regime, and this new report unpacks MAiD’s negative impacts on persons living with disabilities, comparing the Canadian reality with the expectations established in the Carter court decisions.

David Shannon responded to the report and brought his considerable legal experience and expertise in disability rights and health law to the discussion. Shannon is co-editor of a 2023 book on MAiD published by Springer Nature and a member of the MAiD Death Review Committee, an advisory committee of the Ontario Chief Coroner Office, and the Ontario Death Investigation Oversight Council.

The conversation was moderated by Rebecca Vachon, Cardus’ Health Program Director.

A recording of the event will be made available in the near-future for who who were unable to attend.
